As we head towards COP 29, the issues of climate finance and a fossil fuel phaseout towards a just energy transition are ever more critical for climate action. The upcoming UN General Assembly, the UN Summit of the Future and the Global Renewables Summit all taking place one after the other in September provide an important opportunity to reiterate our demands and escalate public pressure to compel governments, international institutions and corporations to listen and take action.
The governments of the Global North have consistently failed for decades to undertake their fair share of climate action both domestically and internationally. This fair share includes the delivery of climate finance for the Global South, an obligation that they committed to as parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. Climate finance is also part of reparations for climate debt they owe to the people of the South for historical and continuing harms caused by their disproportionately large contributions to the climate crisis.
The total amount of climate finance provided and mobilized so far is a pittance compared to the trillions required to finance the climate needs and priorities of the people and countries of the Global South – for mitigation, adaptation, loss and damage, and a just and equitable transition. There are no acceptable reasons for such failures. It is well within the power of governments of the Global North to raise public funds to meet their obligations. They should tax their polluters and profiteers, stop subsidizing fossil fuels, and stop spending for military arms and operations.
Despite the agreed climate goals and mass warnings from climate scientists Global North governments are instead colluding with tax-dodging elites and polluting corporations to expand fossil fuel extraction and production. In 2022 alone, the profits of the oil and gas industry soared to at least $4 trillion from an average of $1.5 trillion in recent years. The continued dangerous extraction and production of coal, gas and oil is incompatible with global commitments to limit warming to under 1.5°C and ensure a livable planet. The world needs a rapid, equitable, and just transition to renewable energy systems and reach real zero by 2050. A huge share of this responsibility to make this happen lies with the governments of the Global North.
The coming months offer crucial opportunities for a radical transformation in our social, economic, and political systems. The Global Fight to End Fossil Fuels and the #PayUp Climate Finance Campaign are joining forces this September 13 to 20 to hold the Global Week of Action for Climate Finance and a Fossil-Free Future! Together let us raise our voices to demand Global North governments to stop making empty promises, cease pandering to corporations to perpetuate fossil fuels. They must meet their climate finance obligations in full. They must take on their full fair share of domestic and international actions to ensure a fast, fair, feminist and funded fossil fuel phase-out.
